SEMrush vs Serpstat 2021: Which Tool Offers the Best Value?
With the multitude of SEO and digital marketing tools available in the market today, you may find yourself overwhelmed and confused trying to choose the ideal one for your job.
As someone who has been in digital marketing for years, I've used most of these tools at one point or another.
And as such, I would be the right person to tell you more about them and which one is better than the other.
So, if you've tried to choose between SEMrush and Serpstat, you'll love this post as I am going to reveal everything you need to know about them.
SEMrush vs Serpstat | overview
Before we move on to comparing SEMrush and Serpstat, let's take a quick look at the tools.
Launched in 2008, SEMrush is a premier competitive research tool for SEO professionals and digital marketers.
SEMrush is specially designed for people who want to take the guesswork out of researching their competition and industry.
Over the years the company has grown so fast that everyone wants their product from large companies to small startups.
Some of the awesome features that made SEMrush what it is:
- Position tracking
- Comprehensive domain analysis
- Track various keyword metrics
- Organic research
- Comparison of several locations
- Monitor the ranking of competitors
- Website auditing tool
- Advertising research
- Identify accurate display dates
- Look for suitable long-tail keywords
Now let's turn to Serpstat:
Serpstat is another fantastic SEO and digital marketing tool that recently came into the spotlight. Just like SEMrush, Serpstat is also designed for online business owners who want to improve their SEO, content marketing and PPC performance for the best result.
Despite being one of the newest in the business, Serpstat is already rubbing shoulders with most of the big players like SEMrush and Ahrefs. This is because it includes several tools that can help you take your website's SEO to the next level.
Some of the excellent properties of Serpstat that have earned it many awards in the industry are:

SEMrush vs Serpstat | user interface
A tool's user interface has a direct impact on efficiency, productivity, and the overall user experience.
I don't think newbies will have trouble navigating Serpstat or SEMrush, as both tools have a clean and easy-to-use interface.
But which of them offers the most user-friendly interface?
Let's find out quickly!
SEMrush has a neat and easy to navigate interface, but it looks a bit cluttered compared to Serpstat.
However, SEMrush still deserves praise for loading a wide variety of features into a compact dashboard. The left navigation menu gives you easy access to everything you need (from domain analysis tools to reports):
To use SEMrush, simply enter a keyword, domain address, or page URL in the search bar and hit the "Search" button:
The dashboard shows some key metrics including organic traffic, top bio keywords, backlink profile, top paid keywords, sample text ads, etc.
What I don't like is the fact that SEMrush has packed a lot of information into a smaller space. This may seem normal, but I know that most people would prefer a more modular representation of data instead.
If you enter a keyword in the search bar again, you will be taken to the overview page in the "Keyword Analytics" menu. As you can see below, the page also has useful data from keyword search volume to keyword difficulty to a list of keyword variations:
Overall, the SEMrush user interface is pretty easy to navigate and it won't take you long to figure it out. Though I wish they had made room for more rooms instead of cramming everything in one place.
Now that we've looked at the SEMrush interface, let's quickly see what Serpstat has.
Once you log into your account, you will immediately notice that Serpstat has a more refined user interface. The first thing you will see is the "List of Projects" page, which lists all of the projects that you have saved in the tool.
As with SEMrush, Serpstat lets you do a quick analysis by entering a domain name, keyword, URL, or URL prefix in the search bar and clicking the "Search" button.
Once you hit the search button, Serpstat will return an overview of the website's organic keywords, traffic, and backlink details. The only thing you'll notice is that Serpstat presents information in a more organized and spatial manner than SEMrush.
Serpstat also presents the website's keyword position distribution, visibility trend for the year, etc. using data visualizations. This gives you a complete overview of the website's online presence:
SEMrush also has a similar function.
You can also search with a keyword. Serpstat takes you to the keyword research overview page, which shows relevant information such as search volume, competition, difficulty level, CPC, various keyword variations, etc. of the keyword.
As you can see, Serpstat presents everything neatly organized.
If you're talking about a user interface, Serpstat is a better choice because of its streamlined and responsive user interface.
SEMrush tried this too, but Serpstat was able to make everything easier and more readable even though they both provide the same amount of data.
Competitor traffic analysis
One of the most important things I often use marketing analytics tools for is spying on my competition to see what they're doing.
That way, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, you can easily use what already works for you.
Both Serpstat and SEMrush have the competitor analysis tool that shows not only your top competitors and their keywords, but also their backlink sources.
Let's see how they compare to each other.
Serpstat Competitor Analysis
The first step in performing a competitor analysis for a tool is to identify the popular blogs in your niche based on your target keyword.
The easiest way to do this with Serpstat is to enter your target keyword in the search bar and hit the "Search" button:
Then click on "Competitors" in the navigation menu "SEO Research":
At that point, you will be presented with a list of the websites that are competing for your target keyword. Now the next step is to review them one by one and analyze their keywords, backlink profiles, PPC spend, traffic trends, etc.
For example, the following happened when I clicked on nichepursuits.com, one of the domains in the list:
Here you can see all the major metrics you need including Ranking Keywords, Keyword Difficulty, Positions, Keyword Volume, Traffic, Competition in PPC, etc.
You can also find your direct competitors by analyzing a domain and then going to "Competitors" under the Rank Tracker tab.
This instantly gives you more competing websites to track and analyze. In simple terms, these are the websites that you should tear down for your competitive analysis.
SEMrush competitive analysis
In order to conduct a competitive analysis with SEMrush, you first need to know who your competitors are.
Simply enter your domain in the search bar and click on the "Organic Research" tab in the "Domain Analysis" navigation menu.
From there, scroll down to the “Primary Organic Competitors” section and click the “Show All Competitors” button:
You will see the "Competitive Positioning Map" which shows you a graphic representation of your most important competitors.
This section provides a full list of your main competitors, as well as an overview of their Google performance.
For each competitor's website listed, you'll see:
- Level of competition
- Number of keywords in use
- Search keywords
- Organic traffic
- Transport costs
- Paid keywords
When you search for your competitors on Google, the main things you want to see are:
- Top Keywords They Target (And How To Steal Them)
- Your backlink sources (and how you can replicate them, too)
SEMrush is impressive in this regard. In the left navigation menu, click the Keyword Gap tab under Gap Analysis again. Once the page opens, enter your domain name along with four of your competitors and see what comes your way.
Click the Compare button. The tool instantly shows you a list of the keywords that your competitors are ranking for that you are missing.
In addition to the Keyword Gap tool, SEMrush has another fantastic competitor analysis feature known as the Backlink Gap, which is probably my favorite feature.
This feature allows you to enter your domain and that of your four competitors to see which backlinks your domain is missing. That's not all; It also tells you where and how your competitors acquired the links. Isn't that super cool?
This tool makes it easy for you to spy on and steal your competitors' backlinks to beat them in their own game.
Here's what I got after entering MOZ (as my own domain) and other competitors:
While Serpstat has a pretty cool competitive analysis tool that makes it easy to see what your competitors are doing, SEMrush is still the best here.
Apart from the fact that there is also a very practical tool for competitor analysis, the "Backlink Gap" function on SEMrush is simply phenomenal. It makes finding potential backlink sources hassle-free and eliminates a lot of manual work.
Therefore, when analyzing my competition, I will choose SEMrush instead of Serpstat every day.
Serpstat vs SEMrush | Keyword research
Keyword research is one of the factors that determine the success or failure of a website, especially when the website relies on search engine traffic for its survival.
You can do keyword research in a number of different ways. However, one of the simplest approaches is to use a tool specially designed for this purpose. This not only makes your job easier. You also save a lot of time.
In this section, we compare SEMrush and Serpstat in terms of their keyword research capabilities.
SEMrush Keyword Research function
The SEMrush Keyword Analysis page contains a lot of important metrics that you can use to measure the effectiveness of a keyword.
On the side you can see:
- Keyword search volume
- Paid search
- Keyword Difficulty
- Phrase match and related keywords
- PPC competitiveness
This will give you helpful insight, but there is a better way to do it and that is with the help of SEMrush's "Keyword Magic Tool".
To use the tool, enter your target keyword in the search bar and see the magic:
This is where SEMrush is going to inundate you with a number of keyword ideas that you can target right away. The keyword list is divided into different segments (broad match, phrase match, exact match, and related).
Excitingly, the tool also lets you sort the keywords based on their competitiveness, making it easy for you to find lots of fantastic keywords for your website.
Hitting the Questions tab will also show you a lot of question-related keywords in your niche:
As you can see, SEMrush makes it easy for you to get a ton of keyword ideas simply by analyzing your competitors.
And if you want to know which of the keywords is easy to rate, “Keyword Difficulty” is there for you.
Serpstat Keyword Research Feature
Like SEMrush, Serpstat produces remarkable results while used for keyword research.
The most important thing is that it is easy to use and gives you a lot of useful keyword data such as:
- Search volume
- Keyword Difficulty
- PPC competition
Serpstat will show you both organic and ad keywords for your specific search:
You can expand the report to show all the keyword variations for your search by clicking the "Show All" button.
I also love that Serpstat can also give you information on specific SERP features including:
- Selected snippets
- Video carousels
- Image carousels
- Knowledge panels
- PAA boxes
Serpstat also has another impressive feature known as Missing Keywords, which is similar to what you get with SEMrush's Keyword Gap tool.
To use the missing keywords feature, simply enter a competitor's domain in the search and hit the "Search" button. Once loaded, click the Missing Keywords tab in the URL Analysis menu:
So what's better in terms of keyword research?
The truth is that both SEMrush and Serpstat do an excellent job in this regard, but I will continue to choose SEMrush as it has proven to be more robust than Serpstat, largely due to its sophisticated keyword magic tool.
SEMrush vs Serpstat | Backlink analysis
SEMrush backlink analysis
One of the cool things about SEMrush is the accurate backlink analysis tool that you can use to analyze your competitor's backlink profile.
To use the SEMrush backlink analyzer, enter your competitor's URL in the search bar and click the "Backlink Analysis" tab under "Link Building:".
SEMrush Backlink Analytics offers you a lot of important measurement data, such as:
- The authority rating of the domain
- References to domains and IPs
- Total number of backlinks
- Monthly visits
- Indexed Pages
- Top anchor
If you click the "Backlinks" tab on the page, more details about the domain link profile will be shown:
Here you can see the backlink types (text, image, form, frame), link attributes (follow, nofollow, sponsored, UGC), the actual backlinks, etc.
SEMrush even shows you when the link was first discovered, which I find useful.
Finally, you can click any of the other tabs (Anchors, Referring Domains, etc.) for more information. Clicking on the Competitors tab will show you more of your competitors so you can analyze their link profile for even more data.
Serpstat backlink analysis
Serpstat also has its own helpful tool for backlink analysis, which, while not as robust as SEMrush's, is still beneficial.
Using the tool is also similar to SEMrush. Just enter your competitor's URL in the search bar and hit the "Search" button.
After the page loads, click on the "Backlink Dashboard" in the left navigation menu under the "Backlink Analysis" tab:
Serpstat gives you a lot of useful backlink data including:
- Serpstat Domain Rank (SDR)
- Total number of backlinks
- References to domains, subdomains and IP addresses
- Types of backlinks
- Anchor texts
- Subnet class C.
Click the Referring Domains tab to view all of the backlinks that refer to domains:
You can also see malicious websites linking to the domain, as well as active and lost links. Just click the appropriate tabs in the menu depending on what you're looking for.
Overall, the Serpstat backlink analysis tool is fantastic, but SEMrush is still better as it provides more detailed data. So you can't even compare the two in this aspect.
Serpstat vs SEMrush | Rank tracker
Both Serpstat and SEMrush also offer rank tracking features that allow you to monitor your keyword ranking in the SERPs to keep track of how your website is performing against the competition.
Both tools can be used to track the performance of your keywords. They provide useful metrics such as rank distributions, top competitors, position changes, geographic rank tracking, monitoring of mobile devices and desktops, etc. In addition, the rank data is updated daily.
However, the SEMrush rank tracking tool beats Serpstat again as it comes with additional features such as:
- Selected snippet report (Serpstat has this one too)
- More sophisticated filtering
- More data visualizations
All of this is designed to improve your search analytics that Serpstat lacks.
Unlike SEMrush, Serpstat doesn't have a chart that shows your keyword rankings over time. This makes it easier to analyze key keyword ranking trends.
SEMrush vs Serpstat | Website audit
Serpstat and SEMrush have technical SEO checking functions that allow you to monitor the state of your website in the SERPs at any time.
As soon as you run this function on SEMrush, you will immediately be shown any serious problems on your website that could negatively affect your technical SEO:
Aside from that, the tool will also warn you about a few things on your website that are not essentially critical but may need to be fixed:

Also of note is Serpstat's SEO audit tool, which has a lot of similar functionality with SEMrush.
To use the tool, visit the List of Projects page, select the website you want to review, then click Review Summary on the Review tab.
You will immediately see various important data about the health of your website that you should take a look at, such as: B .:

- Medium priority issues
- Low priority issues
Scroll down a little and you will see the Problem Summary section:
If you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see any technical search engine optimization issues with your website with recommendations for action.
Both tools provide helpful technical SEO audit reports. However, as expected, the SEMrush data is more comprehensive and gives you more detailed recommendations on how to troubleshoot the issues.

After going through all the functions of SEMrush and Serpstat to see which one is better; We also need to compare their pricing plans.
This will help you determine which is cheaper so that you can choose based on your budget.
SEMrush pricing plans
- SEMrush Pro: The Pro plan costs $ 99.95 / month and gives you 10,000 results per report, ranking result, traffic sources, social media results, 3,000 reports per day, etc.

Overall, Serpstat outperforms SEMrush in terms of affordability as it is obviously cheaper. The price difference is expected, however, given all the sophisticated features that come with SEMrush.

It's worth noting that this comparison between SEMrush and Serpstat is based solely on my personal experience with them, so your own experiences may still be different.
However, SEMrush is hands down one of the best marketing and search engine optimization tools out there for marketers, bloggers, and businesses. And I'm going to choose it instead of Serpstat too because the difference is so big.
