With OptinMonster you can create email opt-ins to grow your email list.

Below, I'll quickly show you how it works.

I'll keep this section of my OptinMonster report short because I'll cover specific features in the next few sections.

Here's your quick rundown of how it works – but read on to take a closer look.

How OptinMonster works in just a few seconds

To get started, you:

  • Select what type of opt-in should be created
  • Pick a template to start with

So yeah – this is quite a whirlwind tour! But I hope it gives you an idea of what OptinMonster does. As I dive into specific features in the next section, you should learn more about the powerful behind-the-scenes detail that you can control with OptinMonster.

OptinMonster Review 2021: 10 Things You Will Love About OptinMonster

1. It has all the useful opt-in form types (and lets you test them out!)

Some email login tools limit you to specific types of login. However, there is a whole world of opt-ins to experiment with. And depending on your traffic, some work better than others.

OptinMonster allows you to experiment with the type of form that works best for you by making a selection five different registration forms (called Campaign types):

  • Pop up
  • Full screen
  • Push it in
  • Floating bar
  • In line

OptinMonster campaign types

This flexibility is fantastic …

If you want to be aggressive with your opt-ins, you can play around with pop-ups and full-screen opt-ins. However, if you prefer not to be so directly in your face, you can just as easily use slide-ins, floating bars, or inline opt-ins.

And you can mix and match too to be aggressive in some places and less aggressive in others.

2. You get tons of templates to start with (great for non-designers!)

Unless you're already a professional designer crafting a nice-looking, conversion-hungry opt-in is difficult.

However, since OptinMonster contains so many pre-made templates, you never have to experience that uncomfortable feeling of a "blank page".

Don't get me wrong – you can certainly build from a blank slate if you're the type who likes this.

However, if you want to save time and still get out a great looking end product, OptinMonster's templates look great and are easy to customize:

OptinMonster templates

The number of templates you will receive depends on the type of campaign you are using. However, generally you have between 10 and 30 templates to choose from.

3. The new form editor is drag and drop (a huge improvement!)

Until recently, one of my biggest criticisms of OptinMonster was that it wasn't drag and drop. While you could edit your forms at any time, you could not previously add new items or drag and drop existing items.

That has changed with the new editor from OptinMonster. It's still technically in beta – but it's a massive improvement in the flexibility you have for controlling your forms.

You can now edit and customize your opt-ins using the beginner-friendly drag and drop. No technical knowledge required!

See how easy it is to add new text to your opt-in:

OptinMonster drag and drop editor

Overall, OptinMonster offers you 11 different elements to use to build your forms::

  • text
  • Spacers
  • image
  • Divider
  • Optin fields
  • Video
  • Symbols
  • countdown
  • HTML
  • button
  • Yes No

Personally, I love that countdown Element because it's easy to add a conversion-boosting scarcity to your opt-in offers. You can even do it Dynamic In order for each visitor to have their own countdown timer, this is a great way to increase the evergreen urgency:

4. Conversion-optimized trigger options (including exit intent!)

In life, timing is everything. The same applies to your registration forms.

Show your form too early and you risk annoying your visitor. Wait too long and you might leave before you even get a chance.

OptinMonster Display rules This option gives you precise control over when your popup appears. With OptinMonster you can trigger popups on a single page by:

  • Time on hand
  • Exit Intent – Shows the popup right before your visitor leaves for another chance to engage them.
  • Scroll distance
  • Inactive time

OptinMonster is triggered

And you can also do things like triggering by:

  • How many pages did a visitor view?
  • How long did your visitor spend on your website in total?

The depth of OptinMonster's triggering rules is one of the main areas where it shines when compared to other opt-in tools.

5. More rules for targeting popups for convertible personalization

Beyond the when, OptinMonster Display rules You can also have granular control over where your forms are displayed. This is insanely important for registration forms because The more relevant you can make your form, the better your conversion rate will be.

That said, instead of creating a single registration form that you display on every page of your website, you will get better results by creating registration forms that are linked to the content that your visitor actually reads.

For example, look at the example of Country Living's OptinMonster. Visitors who viewed DIY content see:

Pop-up Personalization Example 1

But visitors who have viewed the recipe content will see the following:

Pop-up personalization example 2

The offer is personalized and brings more conversions to Country Living.

With OptinMonster you can apply the same principle to your website Display rules.

In terms of content, you can display your popups certain pages or based on the last pages a visitor viewed.

But that really just scratches the surface so you can use your popups in a targeted manner. You can also target:

  • A visitor's device – For example, to show different offers to mobile users
  • Indicates whether a user has previously logged in – This is very powerful as it can save you unnecessary effort in converting someone who already converted
  • Whether a visitor is new or returning – This way you can personalize popups with "Hey, nice to see you again".
  • Which referring URL a visitor comes from – Wouldn't it be great to create a personalized popup for all the traffic that came from a guest post or an advertisement?
  • Location of a visitor – You can create personalized opt-ins based on a user's location
  • A custom cookie – If you are a developer this will allow you to show opt-ins for a specific cookie that you can set.

You can even create special opt-ins if a visitor uses an ad blocker!

OptinMonster targeting rules

And here's what's really great about all of these display rules (triggers included!):

You can combine them with AND OR Conditions. That way, you can get very creative with how to target and trigger your opt-ins as you can mix and match different conditions depending on your needs for a truly unique approach.

6. OptinMonster Email Service Integrations

OptinMonster only helps you Collect email addresses – It doesn't help you to send email to your subscribers. What it does, however, is integrate with pretty much any email marketing service in existence.

They all have biggies:

This is by no means an exhaustive list – I've just picked a few notable names.

To integrate with an email marketing service, simply select it from the drop-down list and fill in some basic details:

OptinMonster email integrations

7. It's really easy to get your opt-ins published (especially on WordPress).

Once you've set up your opt-in, you'll need to post it on your website for it to go live. OptinMonster works with any type of website – All you have to do is add a snippet of code.

But if you use WordPressyou can use the dedicated OptinMonster plugin.

This plugin will not only help you with adding the tracking code but also with adding it This option allows you to activate and deactivate campaigns directly from your WordPress dashboard. This comes in very handy if you are a busy WordPress user.

8. OptinMonster Analytics function: detailed analysis (including conversion rate report)

Once you start running your campaign (s), you can view detailed analytics in your OptinMonster dashboard (even though the data is from Google Analytics):

OptinMonster Analytics Dashboard

Yes, for the time being you have to connect OptinMonster to Google Analytics in order to display the in-dashboard statistics. That's not ideal to be honest, but most people have Google Analytics these days, so it's not a big deal.

As soon as you have set up the integration, you can view all the data directly in the OptinMonster interface.

In addition, OptinMonster is working on its own OptinMonster Analytics solution, which no longer needs to be connected to Google Analytics.

9. Create A / B tests with OptinMonster (you can use it to optimize your forms!)

A / B testing is a very effective way to find out which registration forms are best for your specific audience.

In order to simplify the testing of your forms, OptinMonster contains an integrated A / B test function with which you can test two or more variants against each other.

You can easily create a split test right in your dashboard:

OptinMonster A / B tests

And then you can customize everything about the other variant. Yes everything.

That means beyond basic text or design changes You can even test how different triggers or targeting options compare.

Wouldn't it be great to know if your opt-in popup is working better if you view it right away instead of waiting 10 seconds for it to appear? These types of insights can help you with OptinMonster's A / B testing tool.

10. OptinMonsters unified dashboard for managing multiple websites from one place

When you run multiple websites, it comes in very handy that OptinMonster allows you to manage the opt-ins for several different websites from a single dashboard.

This is much easier than having to go to each site individually, like with a WordPress plugin.

So, if you need to get opt-ins on multiple websites, this is a great feature to consider.

2 things to consider before choosing OptinMonster

In general, the advantages at OptinMonster outweigh the disadvantages. But here are two possible things that you might not like. If these two are deal breakers for you, I recommend a great tool to use at the end of this section instead.

1. The drag and drop editor is not as detailed as a page builder

I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing as the drag and drop editor is still abundantly functional. I don't think you will encounter any problems designing your registration forms.

However, if you come from a WordPress background and are familiar with page builders like Thrive Architect, you will definitely find that the drag and drop editor doesn't offer as many style options as powerful page builders.

You don't necessarily need these styling opt-ins, and OptinMonster isn't overly restrictive, but something to be considered.

2. OptinMonster uses the ongoing SaaS billing

This is another thing that isn't inherently bad, but one that you should still keep in mind. OptinMonster works with SaaS-style billing. This means that you can only use these while you keep paying for them.

Again, this isn't a deal breaker as SaaS billing allows OptinMonster to keep improving its product (e.g. adding the new drag-and-drop builder) and providing you with premium support. However, if you're used to paying a one-time fee for a WordPress plugin, this should be taken into account as well.

Even so, you can still take advantage of OptinMonster coupons on special occasions (bookmark our deals page to get the deal before anyone else does).

OptinMonster vs Thrive Leads: What To Use Instead

Personally, I don't think the above two things are deal breakers – especially when compared to all of the positives I've shared. But i'm not you

If those two things are sticking points, here are some things to check instead:

Flourish leads

Not that flexible in all aspects, Thrive Leads does include a powerful Page Builder interface based on Thrive Architect (read our Thrive Architect review) and is a one-time fee with lifetime updates.

Price evaluation for OptinMonster: Free 7-day trial version of OptinMonster

OptinMonster starts at just $ 14 per month (billed annually) Basic plan. That way, you can use it on a single site and include most, but not all, of the features.

If you're just a solo blogger, this plan is probably fine for you.

If you want to use OptinMonster on multiple websites or want advanced features (e.g. exit intent), you either need the plus or professional Plans:

  • plus – $ 29 per month (billed annually)
  • professional – $ 49 per month (billed annually)

The prices of OptinMonster are higher (fair enough for the usability and the features that come with it). I definitely wouldn't recommend it for newbies or if you are someone just starting out.

You can try free or cheaper OptinMonster alternatives like Sumo.com.

But, If you are planning on making your list seriously and with monetization plans on the cards, then you should definitely take advantage of OptinMonster to add to your list sooner than ever.

Nevertheless, OptinMonster offers one 7 day free trial for all plans and a 7 day no questions asked money back policy So just play around and see if your investment is worth it or not.

My verdict:

I've used Sumo in the past (free version), I use Thrive Leads on a lot of websites, and I use OptinMonster on another website so I know who is where:

OptinMonster is like the Mac in the PC world.

Overall, I think OptinMonster's incredibly detailed display rules, combined with all of the other features I highlighted, are a great option for most websites trying to build an email list.

Here's another nice thing about OptinMonster:

You don't have to take my OptinMonster review as a gospel. OptinMonster offers an unconditional, no questions asked 7 day money back guarantee.

That means you can try it out for yourself without putting your wallet at risk.
