How do you Fix a Long Crack in a Windshield?

First, make sure the crack isn't simply dirt or water trapped underneath and causing it to look worse than it really is. Simply roll down the window and spray some watter on the inside of the glass. If you see that there's no damage then just clean up the excess water with a paper towel or cloth and your problem should be solved until you can get around to have it replaced. There are kits available from companies such as ClearView which claim to repair small cracks for about 3 years without harming night vision but I've never used one so can't give any first hand experience.
As for fixing the crack, if it's not too big you might be able to fill it with an adhesive windshield sealer. Many of these products are putty like which you just press into place then squeegee out the excess. Others will actually contain a tiny fiberglass mat material that self-levels to give a smooth finish and look almost as good as new. Some even come with a built-in UV protective agent that helps prevent future fading or discoloring. Be sure to do a test first on a small part of the glass to make sure you're satisfied with the end result before doing a major application on your car. An alternate solution I've heard from several people is getting hold of some clear vinyl repair tape. You can get these rolls at most any hardware store, home center or even WalMart in the automotive section. They come in several widths and are used to seal air conditioner lines (see this answer for more on how they work). Simply place a piece over the top of the crack, trim off any excess material and rub your finger around it a few times to ensure a tight bond. The only thing I'd watch out for is to make sure you have properly cleaned up all dust particles or debris from either side of the windshield before applying this type of repair kit as it'll inhibit proper adhesion and you may end up with another problem not too far down the road if dirt somehow gets underneath.
I recently had a windshield replaced at my cost because the crack was so long and severe that it couldn't be properly filled. So if you have a rock chip or a crack that's been repaired before that didn't hold then calling around to find out what your options might be could save you from having to shell out big bucks to have it done professionally. Otherwise, for less than $10 in materials you can perform this type of repair yourself."
