How To Clean Your Air Ducts

Jul 23

These are the steps to cleaning your air ducts at home. You can remove allergens such as dust, pet hair and mold in minutes.

How to Clean Your Home's Vents and Air Ducts

You should be aware of these safety tips before you begin cleaning your ducts. These safety tips will ensure your safety and protect your cooling and heating systems.

  • Before you clean your air ducts, make sure your thermostat is off.
  • If you have to climb ladders or step-stools to reach high ceiling registers or wall vents, be sure to have someone to help.
  • Eye protection is also recommended to protect your eyes from dust and debris that can fall on the overhead air vents.

STEP 1: Gather your Equipment and Materials

To clean your air ducts, you will need a dryer vent brush, warm soapy water and cleaning cloths. To open ceiling or wall vents, you will need a screwdriver and a step stool.

STEP 2: Clean and Remove Your Vent Covers

It is easy to take out floor registers. You can usually lift them. Use a screwdriver to remove wall registers. Use a screwdriver to remove the vent cover if it is very dusty. Use warm soapy water to wash the vent cover. You can scrub the vent cover as often as you like, but be careful not to scratch the finish. Unvarnished metal vent covers can be washed in the dishwasher.

To whiten plastic vent covers you need to wash them in warm soapy water. Next, place them on a baking tray or another large container and then cover them with hydrogen peroxide. After an hour or so, place them in a sunny area and then wash them with hot soapy water. You can then shake off any excess moisture and let them air dry completely before you reinstall.

STEP 3: Clean Your Duct

The vent brush should be inserted into the duct as far and as close as possible. Rotate the brush, and then run it along the walls of the duct. You should use a gentle touch with crinkly Mylar Flex ducts. They are easy to damage. Tap the ductwork a few times before you remove any debris. Remove the brush, and then insert the vacuum cleaner'shose as far away as possible to remove any debris. An extension hose is available for shop vacuums. This will allow you to reach further into your duct system.

STEP 4 - Clean the Rest

After vacuuming, clean the vent's interior with a microfiber cloth. Rinse the rags and change them as necessary. To remove stubborn dirt, spray an all-purpose cleaner onto the cloth. Make sure you clean around the duct and the wall.

STEP 5: Finish up

Turn on the thermostat by putting the vent cover back on. To filter any dust that was not removed during cleaning, run your system for thirty minutes. After 30 minutes, clean your system and change the air filter.

Do It Yourself!

Forced air from your HVAC can flow through ducts and vents that are clogged with dirt, dust, and hair. This debris can spread throughout your home. You'll find cleaner indoor air if you clean those ducts. This will also mean that you'll see less dust. You might notice a decrease in odors or allergy symptoms depending on the substance that is hiding.
